Lessons from the 2008 Crisis: Stability and Growth

When the 2008 financial crisis struck, builders across Northeast Texas started going under, crippled by too much debt, too many spec houses, and too little financial discipline. Having just established S. Clements Homes the year before, we managed not only to survive but thrive, thanks to a fundamentally different approach.
We never built spec houses, preferring to operate on a simple rule: build only when there’s a contract and deposit in hand. Unlike many, we chose not to take on debt to run day-to-day operations, instead living strictly within our means. I didn’t believe in overpromising just to win contracts; we provided straightforward prices and kept our promises—qualities that stood out when others faltered.
As more builders failed, their customers sought us out for the stability we represented. This period was a testament to why sustainable business practices aren’t just ethical—they’re vital.
The discipline we embraced during those challenging times continues to guide us, even when the market is flourishing. It’s a lesson we carry forward with every home we build.
