Once upon a time, Texas builders needed a license from the Texas Residential Construction Commission (TRCC) to operate. This state-regulated body ensured builders met stringent criteria around financial stability, ongoing education, and accountability. However, in 2008, Texas dissolved the TRCC, removing these key requirements. Today, anyone can claim they’re a builder in Texas with no state licensing.

The removal of these licensing requirements has led to significant consequences in the industry. Before, builders had to prove financial stability and undergo continuous training to qualify for a license. Without these barriers, financially unstable or inexperienced individuals have entered the field, often lacking the skills or resources to complete projects professionally. This means that potential homeowners have no state-level safety net against subpar construction practices or fraudulent builders.
